A California woman has been accused of a hate crime after she tried to detain a black delivery driver she believed was speeding — and then verbally assaulted him, police said.
The 35-year-old woman, whose name was not released by authorities, told officers she saw the man speed by her last week in Berkeley, SFGate reported Wednesday.
She decided to pursue him with her boyfriend in their own vehicle, police said.
When she caught up with the driver, the woman “used force” to prevent the driver from getting away and spewed “hateful language disparaging of people of color,” police said.
Both she and bystanders called 911 at the scene, police said.
Shortly after, she was arrested on charges of suspicion of false imprisonment, battery with bodily injury, using offensive words in a public place and willfully threatening a person based on perceived characteristics, the newspaper reported.
