Vladimir Putin’s biggest threat in the Kremlin has been revealed, as a Ukrainian military intelligence chief claims that one official sees himself as Putin’s “successor”.

Kyrylo Budanov spoke to Ukrainska Pravda about the power struggle currently thought to be gripping the Kremlin.

Mr Budanov said that former President  Dmitry Medvedev has “no chance” but that Dmitry Patrushev, son of former FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev could “hypothetically” take over from Putin.

However, he said that Sergey Kiriyenko, who is widely seen as the architect of the Kremlin’s policies of annexing Ukrainian territory, sees himself as Putin’s successor.

He said: “Kiriyenko sees himself in the chair. He sees himself as the successor in such a more or less peaceful transfer of power. “
