Toto Wolff has countered Lewis Hamilton’s claim that the team’s hunt for the F1 crown is completely over. Wolff said the team could fight for the title as soon as six races time if they get on top of their issues.

When asked whether Wolff had given up on fighting for the title, he replied ‘No’.

Wolff added: “We are four races into the championship. We are really lacking performance and on paper we are just not fighting for a win. But that does not mean in six races from now or 10 we are fighting for it.”

His comments are at a contrast to Lewis Hamilton who claimed yesterday the Silver Arrows were out of the hunt. He all but wrote off any chance of him claiming an eighth world title after the team’s poor start to the campaign.

He said: “A lot of work is going on in the background and it is what it is, this is what we have. We haven’t got it right this year but everyone is working as hard as they can to correct it.

“This is the situation that we are faced with and we are obviously not fighting for the Championship but we are fighting to understand this car and improve and progress through the year. That is all we can hope for right now.”
