A woman shared a genius bargain fridge hack that simultaneously personalises your fridge and helps keep it clean.
‘This is my go-to $6 fridge hack,’ she wrote on a popular Facebook group. ‘I bought these tea towels from Kmart to add on top of the glass shelves.’
She added, ‘It provides extra grip and personalises your fridge. Plus, it keeps the shelves clean!’
When asked about how she measured the towels to fit the shelves, the woman said the classic size tends to fit the larger shelves – and she cut the rest up to fit the smaller areas on the sides of the doors.

Many were impressed by the bargain hack and how it was an easy fix for a tasteful-looking fridge.
‘I think it looks so lovely and would certainly save on shelf cleaning,’ said one woman.
‘I just wish my fridge had so little in it and looked so pretty and neat! Meanwhile I’m stuck with 500 condiment bottles, and bowls of leftovers shoved everywhere.’
Another added, ‘This is so cool. Handy for catching drips and spills as well – and so much easier to chuck them in the washing than having to scrub the shelves all the time.’
The woman said regular sized tea towels tend to fit the larger shelves with a fold or two – and she cut the rest up to fit the smaller areas on the sides of the doors
Others shared similar hacks they used themselves.
‘I use rubber mats and cut them to size,’ said one woman. ‘When you clean your fridge you just rinse them off and they’re as good as new.’
‘Clear placemats work too – does the job but still lets the light through the shelves so it’s easier to see.’
‘I do this in my freezer!’ said another. ‘It keeps everything from sticking to the glass.’
Many shared that rubber or clear placemats work as well – and make it easier to see as they let the light in through the shelves
But many weren’t as enamoured with the easy hack.
‘While this looks lovely,’ said one woman, ‘the reason fridges have shiny flat non-porous surfaces is to reduce fungal and bacterial growth.’
She added, ‘And as nice as it looks, I would be concerned – these tea towels, especially with moisture added, would be the perfect breeding ground for these nasties.’
Another said, ‘The idea of glass shelves in fridges is to help with lighting so you can see what’s in there – this completely ruins that feature.’
‘This “hack” would make for some very dark shelves depending on where your fridge light is located – and I’m not sure why anyone would want that.’
‘Your tea towels will get mouldy so quick from all the condensation – and it will spread and ruin all of the food in an instant. Not worth the pretty photo.’
