In an incredible attack against the EU, German MEP Gunnar Beck insisted the EU had failed to defeat the virus while countries such as the UK had managed to vaccinate large numbers of their populations. Amid the row over the AstraZeneca vaccine, Mr Beck claimed the EU must do more to protect its citizens. He said today: “Covid-19 is a virus in which the European Union has failed.
“If we look at Asia, which is where the virus originated, they’ve had fewer deaths.
“China is enjoying record exports and India is solving the virus without lockdown through certain drug treatments.
“Israel, the UK and the US have all managed to vaccinate many more people than the EU.
“We are told there will now be a vaccination certificate but not enough people have been vaccinated.
“You need to have a certain number of people who are infected to create herd immunity but we’re still focusing on vaccinations.
“So please put an end to this ruinous lockdown and respect our fundamental principles.
“We need a great reset but not for the citizens but for the failing EU.”
The MEP’s attack against Brussels comes as the Commission prepares to toughen controls for how vaccines leave the continent.

Although EU officials have claimed the upcoming plans will not bloc exports leaving, it will impact how many leave the EU to countries such as the US and UK.
The key criteria for the new proposals are how much the EU has received from a state where exports are heading to.
Secondly, the EU will judge the proportion of a country’s population which has been vaccinated to assess whether it is in a worse or better position than the bloc.
This will also work in tandem with measures introduced earlier in the year which states every vaccine batch leaving the bloc must be approved before doing so.
