Sunrise executive producer Michael Pell announces surprise engagement

Michael Pell’s farewell party for his final day at Sunrise turned into an engagement celebration when his boyfriend Daniel Burgess-Wise proposed. 

The executive producer’s beau popped the question in front of friends, family and co-workers on Saturday afternoon, with videos of the sweet moment shared to Instagram Stories. 

‘Will you marry me?’ Daniel, 29, is heard saying into a microphone, his voice breaking, before Michael, 36, replied ‘Yes!’ and the pair embraced.

The engagement was witnessed by a whole host of his famous co-workers, including Sunrise and Weekend Sunrise stars David Koch, Edwina Bartholomew, Kylie Gillies and Matt Doran. 

Also in attendance were the ABC’s Leigh Sales, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Married At First Sight stars Ella Ding and Domenica Calarco and The Daily Edition’s Sally Obermeder, The Daily Telegraph reports. 

It was first revealed that Pell was dating his colleague Burgess-Wise in late 2020.

The couple are believed to have begun dating sometime after Daniel took over the role as a director on the program in 2018, following the retirement of Ken Moore. 

Prior to his role on Sunrise, Daniel worked on a range of programs for various networks, including SBS, Nine and Fox Sports.   

According to The Daily Telegraph, the network confirmed that they’re in a relationship, but said it was ‘a private matter that did not impact their work’.

 Further cementing their relationship status, both Daniel and Michael have also shared several images featuring each other to their respective social media accounts. 

The pictures include a number of photos from their travels together.

Michael is rumoured to be one of the top paid executives at Seven, and he produces up to 24 hours of live television every week.

He began his career with the network as a producer in the news department, before being promoted to the executive producer role in 2009.  

At that time, he was one of the youngest executive producers on the network at only 26 years old. 

Pell is stepping down from Sunrise to take up a new position with the network in LA, where he will effectively be Seven’s ‘talent scout’ in the U.S. sourcing new formats.

His job title will be Senior Vice President, Entertainment Content, North America.

Pell did not appear on screen during his final day at the breakfast show on Friday, despite having done so when he celebrated 10 years at the helm in November 2020, with Sunrise instead airing a photo slideshow. 

Several behind-the-scenes photos were shown, including snaps of Pell schmoozing with A-list celebrities and posing with the presenters at Brekky Central.

Pell has overseen an extraordinarily successful period for Sunrise – Australia’s No. 1 breakfast show – since replacing Adam Boland as EP in 2010.

He is credited with helping the program, anchored by Barr and Koch, extend its lead against Channel Nine’s Today show, hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon.

Sarah Stinson, the executive producer of The Morning Show for the past 11 years, has been promoted to the newly created role of Director of Morning Television, overseeing Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise and The Morning Show.
