After being slapped in the face by an angry French resident during a visit to southeastern France, President Emmanuel Macron said that slapping someone in the face is “not democracy”. Mr Macron branded the attack as “stupidity” and that he would not “respond”. His comments were later echoed by France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex in the French Parliament where he denounced the “violence” that took place on Tuesday.
The assailant, a 28-year-old local man, shouted a centuries-old French royalist war cry “Montjoie Saint-Denis” in a show of opposition to President Macron’s politics.
He also shouted ‘Down with Macron-ism’.
Another 28-year-old was also arrested at the scene.
Mr Macron is due to attend the G7 summit in Cornwall this weekend which will run from Friday, June 11 to Sunday, June 13.
