Shane is famed for playing Alfie Moon on the BBC soap between 2002-2005, returning in 2010–2016, and then again between 2018–2019.

A BBC documentary ten years ago, with the arresting title Jamie: Drag Queen At 16, which inspired an effervescent musical.

It inspired a theatre production in which Jamie is 16, living in Sheffield with his adoring single mum, but craving the approval of his estranged dad.

At his comprehensive school, everyone knows he’s gay. In any case, there isn’t a closet big enough to hide him. Jamie is flamboyantly camp, and secretly yearns to be a drag queen.

Jamie horrifies his teacher by announcing that he intends to attend his end-of-year prom in a dress. You can’t do that, says the teacher.

He gets support from his mum, his best friend Pritti, and a retired drag artist once known as Loco.

The story’s antagonists are his dad, the school bully and an uptight teacher. He soon wins round the naysayers and expresses his true self in the coming of age production.
