  • FEMAIL picks out some of the best rose perfumes that are ‘reinventing the genre’
  • The flower has had a certain allure ever since ancient civilizations created scents
  • Rose oil is an expensive ingredients as it can require as many as 60 flowers

Think of rose perfume and you might remember a bottle on your granny’s dresser.

But with big names, such as Tom Ford and Diptyque, reinventing the genre by combining classic notes with something fresher and more modern, rose is having something of a renaissance.

And there’s good reason to try the trend. The flowers have had a certain allure ever since ancient civilisations began experimenting with scent-making.

The Roman emperor Nero is said to have held banquets where rose petals were showered onto guests’ heads, while Cleopatra famously seduced Marc Antony in a bedroom deeply carpeted with rose petals.

Today, they retain their mystique, thanks in part to the fact that to yield a single drop of rose oil can require as many as 60 flowers, making it one of the most expensive perfume ingredients in the world.

Here’s a rundown of some of the modern rose scents vying for your attention…

JUICY & FRUITY

This is a jammy blend of sweet roses and raspberry that you can imagine being the scent of a juicy, fruity summer cocktail.

It’s softer as it dries down, leaving a sweet powderiness.

SUGARY SWEET

A classic.

There’s a bit of citrus here, but the first hit is a very sugary one, with violet and cassis alongside the rose.

It’s maybe better suited to those with a sweeter tooth/nose.

Claiming to be 96 per cent naturally derived ingredients, this smells like the rose perfume that your grandma might have worn.

It’s comforting and a touch powdery — one for the nostalgics.

BOUQUET BEAUTY

Launched more than 20 years ago, this has stood the test of time.

It’s like burying your head in a bouquet of roses, there’s a hint of green here but it’s mostly rose, rose and more rose.

LIGHT & BRIGHT

This doesn’t hit you over the head with roses as others do.

Instead, it retains echoes of the original Miss Dior, and packs a musky, soapy punch that’s clean and easy to wear.

WINTER WONDER

Although this has an initial citrus kick, it’s mostly an earthier rose scent, with a hint of pot pourri, too.

In hot weather it could feel too cloying, so wear to give a winter day a floral uplift.
