Rishi Sunak and Volodymyr Zelensky vow to crush 'Putin’s barbaric regime' in urgent call

Rishi Sunak and Volodymyr Zelensky held their first phone call this evening, with the new Prime Minister reaffirming his support for Ukraine. Mr Sunak pledged to continue to put pressure on “Putin’s barbaric regime”. A Downing Street spokeswoman said Mr Sunak spoke to Mr Zelensky this evening to “underline the United Kingdom’s steadfast support for Ukraine”. 

The new Prime Minister said the UK’s support for Ukraine will be “as strong as ever under his premiership”, adding that Mr Zelensky can “count on his Government to stand in continued solidarity”. 

The Downing Street Spokesperson added: “The Prime Minister also noted the importance of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s work in Ukraine to ensure nuclear safety and provide transparency around any disinformation.

“Both leaders agreed on the need to continue to place pressure on Putin’s barbaric regime through continued economic sanctions.”

Mr Zelensky congratulated Mr Sunak on his appointment, also wishing him a happy Diwali.

The official said that Mr Sunak told the Ukrainian President he hoped they would “see each other in person soon.”
