Queen Elizabeth spoke publicly for the first time about her late husband Prince Philip, as she presided over the opening of the Scottish parliament Saturday.

“I have spoken before of my deep and abiding affection for this wonderful country and of the many happy memories Prince Philip and I always held of our time here,” said the queen, who attended the Edinburgh event with her eldest son Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles.

The queen, 95, and Prince Philip, who died in April at 99 years old, spent many summers at Balmoral Castle, the royal residence in Scotland. It was the first time the queen opened Scottish parliament without Philip, among whose official titles was the Duke of Edinburgh.

“The beginning of a new session is a time for renewal and fresh thinking, providing an opportunity to look to the future and our future generations,” the queen said during her remarks to Scottish lawmakers.
