The late royal’s biographer, royal expert Hugo Vickers, described how he believed the Queen Mother would have been “horrified” to learn of the fallout of the split between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Firm.

He pinpointed Meghan and Harry’s 2021 interview with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey as what he thought would be a particular point of contention for the Queen Mother.

He told The Sun: “I think the Queen Mother would have been absolutely horrified in regards to Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah.

“Fundamentally, a lot of things that were said there that were not true and very easy to disprove.

“I’m sure she would be very unhappy.”

But she would have been tight-lipped about precisely what she thought of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s choices, Mr Vickers said.

He drew similarities between the Sussexes and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, with whom the Queen Mother “didn’t bother”.

Simpson, a divorcée, was frowned upon as a choice of wife for the monarch, with Edward giving up his crown to walk down the aisle with her.

Edward’s brother, King George VI, then ascended the throne in his brother’s stead.

Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, sat alongside King George until his death in 1952, when their daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, became sovereign.

Mr Vickers claimed the Duke and Duchess of Windsor “just didn’t exist to her at all”, with the Queen Mother’s great-grandson and daughter-in-law likely to have provoked the same response.

He commented: “This was the attitude towards the Duke and Duchess of Windsor – she just didn’t bother with them.

“They just didn’t exist to her at all.

“I think that’s how she would also feel about Meghan and Harry – they would be ignored, they would be blanked.

“You wouldn’t have been able to get much out of her about what she thought about them.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were leaving working royal life less than two years after they tied the knot at Windsor in 2018.
