Phillip Schofield was forced to apologise to disability rights activist Barbara Lisicki after an unsuitable car was sent to collect her from her home.

The presenter, 59, explained that ‘we still have a long way to go’ when it comes to inclusivity as Barbara arrived late due to the mistake, on Monday. 

Barbara worked to advocate the rights of disabled people through civil disobedience and the formation of an activist organization in the 1990s.

Speaking on the show, Phillip began: ‘This is not how I’d like to start the show, but I’m going to start with an apology.

‘When I was preparing for this interview I was going to ask about how much are we progressing, are we getting any better. 

‘Then I find out the car company we use for this show – and we specifically asked them for a car that enables your access – but we had to change the order of the show today because they didn’t send a car you could get into.’

Phillip continued as he detailed: ‘So we still have a long way to go.’

The incident served to showcased Barbara’s daily plight as This Morning was forced to rearrange the show.  

Barbara responded: ‘It’s one of life’s daily ironies. It’s a frustration that all disabled people experience.’

She explained: ‘There’s always a barrier to just being able to get on with following your plans or living your life.’   

The presenter added: ‘Reading your story this morning, there were parts of it I had never heard. And that’s the important mission you were, and you are still, on.’ 

Barbara is set to star in the BBC docudrama Then Barbara Met Alan, which follows the story of herself and fellow activist Alan Holdsworth.

The story of their campaign where they chained themselves to buses and blocked streets to raise awareness for disabled rights, will feature on BBC Two on March 21.  

Phillip was joined on the show by Josie Gibson as she stand in for Covid-stricken Holly Willoughby.  

Presenter Holly tested positive for Covid over the weekend after Phillip joked he thought both he and Holly ‘might be immune’ from the illness as neither of them had contracted it up until recently.
