However, Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England told fund managers on Tuesday: “You’ve got three days left now and you’ve got to sort it out.”

He told the BBC that while the Bank has tried hard to find ways to calm the markets and preserve financial stability, it had always been clear the help would be temporary.

He told them it was now down to financial firms to arrange their affairs and ensure pension funds are resilient.

But, while this latest announcement appears to show support will end by October 14, it could mean a further sell-off in gilts, according to Mr Ashmore.
