New Zealand COVID-19 minister’s x-rated gaffe goes viral

New Zealand’s COVID-19 lockdown is really heating up.

The country’s pandemic response minister unintentionally gave Kiwis some x-rated advice during a live COVID-19 press briefing Sunday — reminding residents to social distance when they get outside to “spread their legs.”

“It is a challenge for people in high-density areas to get outside and spread their legs when they are surrounded by other people,” Chris Hipkins said as he spoke about the rising number of cases.

The steamy slip of the tongue — which has now going viral — immediately made New Zealand’s director-general of health, Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, smirk and raise his eyebrows as he stood beside the minister during the briefing.

Hipkins also appeared to stumble and turn pink after realizing his blunder.

But New Zealanders, who are currently in lockdown after getting their first COVID-19 infection in six months, embraced it as much-need comic relief — immediately seizing on his advice.

Twitter quickly erupted with photos of residents “spreading their legs” out in public.

“Following ministry of health advice today and getting out to #SpreadYourLegs. Us kiwis are a compliant lot,” one person tweeted.

Another wrote: “Well, we’ve been compliant with the govt this far, best not stop now… *starts undoing belt buckle* #spreadyourlegs.”

“Do the right thing folks: stay local when you have the urge to … #SpreadYourLegs,” another tweet read.

A mock government sign is also being shared that reads: “Spread your legs, not the virus.”
