Christchurch Airport, which is located on New Zealand’s south island, was evacuated after the item was found by police.

A spokesperson from the force said: “An item of interest has been located at Christchurch Airport.”

They added: “Police were made aware around 8am (around 9pm GMT)

“The domestic terminal is in the process of being evacuated as a precaution.”

Reports suggest a bomb disposal unit arrived at the airport at around 9.15am.

Level one in the domestic terminal and the foodcourt are reported to have been evacuated.

This left hundreds of travellers standing outside the airport.

The Aviation Security Service informed 1News an officer on hand had identified the item as what appears to be an improvised explosive device, commonly known as an IED.

However, a police spokesperson told the same news network it had not been a bomb threat.

According to the New Zealand Herald, flights are continuing to touch down in the Garden City.
