Police in New Jersey are responding to the reported shooting of police officers today in a residential area about a mile west of Newark airport, with reports suggesting a suspect is armed with a “long gun”. Details on the number of officers injured or the extent of their injuries are not immediately available.

Video taken from news helicopters showed police officers in tactical gear gathered on streets in the neighbourhood and searching on top of and around the base of at least one multi-story building.

Police vehicles could be seen placed to block roads in the area.

Governor Phil Murphy said he was monitoring “an unfolding situation in Newark,” but did not share specifics.

Fox5NY reporter Linda Schmidt tweeted: “FBI on scene, ATF & US Marshals.

“Suspect armed with long gun.”

His statement added: “I am in touch with local authorities and the state is providing resources as requested.

“We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”
