Mother claims ‘overbearing’ neighbour ‘bought a TRAMPOLINE’ so she could deliberately see into her garden – after she installed 6ft fence for privacy

  • Anonymous woman complained to Mumsnet about an overly friendly neighbour
  • She said the neighbour bought a trampoline after she raised her fence to 6ft
  • Readers told the mother to be frank with her neighbour, or simply to ignore her

A woman has claimed her overly friendly neighbour put a trampoline in her garden so she could see over their fence – which her family installed for privacy.

Sharing the story on Mumsnet, the anonymous mother said there had initially been a ‘low hedge’ separating her garden from that of her chatty neighbour.

But shortly afterwards, the family decided to install a 6ft fence, telling their neighbour it was because they were thinking of getting a dog.

The woman’s husband then planted bamboo near the fence, creating a barrier of around 8ft between the two properties.

However, the woman said her neighbour has since been spotted jumping on a trampoline to see over the fence – but only when her family is out in their garden.

She said they had initially thought the trampoline was for her neighbour’s child, but ‘they don’t use it, she does’.

‘When I was out in the garden a few weeks ago, up she popped over the top of the bamboo, laughing hysterically, and shouting “see what I’ve had to resort to! hahaha!”,’ the post read.

‘I said something along the lines of “oh yes haha, is that a trampoline for X?” and she said it was originally but he wasn’t interested so she’s going to use it for exercise instead.

‘So far all her exercises have coincided with us being out in the garden.’

The anonymous poster, thought to be from the UK, said that whenever she is out in the garden, her neighbour ‘appears over the bamboo, laughing and shouting’.

Those in the comments were quick to share their disbelief, with some suggesting the woman talk to her neighbour frankly about the uncomfortable situation.

Others said the mother should simply put in headphones, and ignore her.

One user said: ‘Use your words. Tell her outright that when you’re in your garden you’re not looking for a conversation, that if you do want to have one you’ll invite her over, and to leave you alone otherwise.

‘This is how we approached it with our irritating former neighbours who kept letting their child pester us.

‘Sure, they got the huff and said there was no need to be unkind, but as well as the huff they got the point.’

Someone else agreed, saying: ‘With persistent people like this you need to be blunt. It’s the only way to get it across.’

Another added: ‘Headphones every time you are out in the garden and ignore her because you can’t hear her. She’ll give up.’

One commenter said their mother had dealt with a similar situation.

They said: ‘I think she might just be lonely, however it is annoying when you’re trying to relax in the garden and instead have to deal with talking to a neighbour.’
