Islamic insurgents entered the capital Kabul on Sunday thus threatening the 20 years of US-led democratic reforms. Now, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a battle-hardened veteran of Afghanistan’s war with the Soviet Union, has been tipped to become president of a Taliban led Afghan government. He co-founded the Taliban in 1994 and helped to establish its previous fundamentalist rule over Afghanistan.

Speaking to Newsweek in 2009 Mr Baradar said: “The history of Afghanistan shows that Afghans never get tired of struggling until they have freed their country.

“We shall continue our jihad till the expulsion of our enemy from our land.”

Mr Baradar was very close to deceased Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar.

An Afghan official, speaking to the BBC, explained the two men’s close relationship and said: “His wife is Mullah Omar’s sister.

“He controlled the money.

“He was launching some of the deadliest attacks against our security forces.”

The terror chief was freed from jail at the request of the US in 2018.

He is now said to be leading the Taliban insurgents that have entered the capital Kabul on Sunday.

He was born in 1968, which would make him about 53 years old today.

Over the weekend the US has removed most of its personnel from its embassy in Kabul.

US president Joe Biden has decided to pull all US troops out of Afghanistan by 11 September of this year, this will be exactly 20 years since the terror attack of 9/11.

US-led forces toppled the Taliban in 2001 following the 9/11 terror attacks.

The rationale behind the invasion was that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was being protected by the Taliban.
