Macron handed massive warning: Le Pen to storm to victory in first round voting – new poll

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, is set to win the first round of voting when France heads to the polls next year, according to a survey by French Institute of Public Opinion for Le Figaro. The 52-year-old is on track for another showdown with Mr Macron in the race for the Élysée Palace.

Support for Ms Le Pen has soared by three points in the last month and the poll suggests she would win up to 30 percent of the first vote.

Mr Macron and his La République En Marche! party trailed by two points and was placed on 28 percent.

The survey suggests in the second round of voting, Mr Macron would turn the tables on his old nemesis and go on to win a second term in office.

The results of the poll suggested he would win by 54 percent to 46 percent in a second-round run-off.

Such a result would be significantly closer than the 16 point margin between the two in the 2017 contest.

Ms Le Pen has gained support from voters aged between 25 and 64, but Mr Macron remains hugely popular amongst younger voters.

The 43-year old received 69 percent of support from those aged 18-24 in the poll for the French newspaper.

Xavier Bertrand, a leading French conservative candidate, received just 15 percent of the vote in the survey.

One of Ms Le Pen’s flagship policies is to reduce immigration numbers and has vowed to defend French culture.

In the interview, she said: “It’s also about the defence of the French lifestyle.

“It’s about Americans not being French, French not being Italians. We each have our culture, each our identity.”

She added: “Me, I’m the candidate of the restoration of the authority of the state.”
