House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is slated to meet with former President Donald Trump in Bedminster, NJ, on Thursday, Trump said in a statement ahead of the gathering.
“Kevin McCarthy will be meeting with me this afternoon at Trump National in Bedminster, N.J. Much to discuss!” the statement said.
The gathering marks the second time McCarthy (R-Calif.) has traveled to meet with Trump since President Biden took office, having previously flown to meet with the former president at Mar-a-Lago in January.
Following their previous meeting, McCarthy said Trump assured that he would assist in House Republicans’ efforts to take back the majority in 2022. While Trump has committed to aid in House races, he has targeted a number of sitting GOP lawmakers who voted in favor of his impeachment.
Since leaving office, multiple high-profile GOP lawmakers including senior members of the Republican Study Committee, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) have made an effort to meet with Trump, showing his continuing influence over the direction of the party.
The California Republican’s visit to Trump’s golf club comes as McCarthy gears up to select which GOP lawmakers will sit on the Jan. 6 select committee, which is tasked with investigating the riot at the Capitol earlier this year, and recently passed the House largely along party lines.
