Horror as young woman allegedly raped near Costa Coffee on retail park – man arrested

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman in her 20s was attacked near a retail park in Salford, Greater Manchester this morning. The Costa Coffee shop on Regent retail park off Regent Road was cordoned off by police as officers began their investigation into the alleged rape. Specialist officers from the forensics teams were present at the scene, with the outside seating area of the coffee shop taped off.

Greater Manchester Police said they were called shortly before 8am to the alleged rape of the young woman near the Regent retail park off Regent Road.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in custody.

Detectives from the Swinton CID are continuing their investigation, with police believing the victim and the suspect were known to each other prior to the incident.

The young woman is being supported by specialist officers following the alleged attack.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “We were called at around 7.55am today (Sunday) to a reported rape of a woman in her 20s near Regent retail park off Regent Road, Salford.

“Officers attended and a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.

“He remains in custody. The victim is being supported by specialist officers while detectives from our Swinton CID continue to investigate.

“At this stage, it’s believed the victim and the suspect were known to each other prior to the incident.”

The latest figures from the Ministry of Justice show 122 rape cases were heard in court in 2021 following investigations by Greater Manchester Police.

More than a third (44) resulted in convictions – in line with 2019 – before the Covid pandemic.
