Half term tragedy after boy, 11, hit and killed by bus while riding bike

A schoolboy has been killed after being struck by a bus when travelling on a bicycle.

The young boy, 11, was killed on Tuesday afternoon around 3.30pm, police officers have said.

He was struck by a bus in the seaside town of Whitburn, in South Tyneside, and the road remained closed for several hours after the collision.

Emergency services attended the scene at Lizard Lane near Sunderland on Tuesday, including Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service.

It is understood that the boy has not yet been formally identified.

Northumbria Police have launched an appeal for any relevant information concerning the collision, including dash-cam footage.
