Floral fancy! Countess of Wessex is elegant in a £157 ME+EM maxi-dress to meet the health minister of Malawi during solo royal tour in Africa

  • Sophie Wessex,57, met with the health minister of Malawi at an eye clinic
  • She also sat down with patients who have had their eyesight restored
  • The clinic focuses on trachomatous trichiasis a condition caused by infection

The Countess of Wessex looked elegant as she met with Malawi’s health minister in the town of Salima, marking another part of her solo African tour.

Sophie 57, who is married to Prince Edward, donned a £157 pink floral dress by brand ME+EM for the occasion.

It’s  the first time she’s worn it – the royal was spotted wearing the ditzy print gown whilst watching Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year.

She paired the dress with a pair of nude wedges and opted for a practical updo – which would have come in handy in the warm African heat.

The mother-of-two met with MP the Honourable Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda at the Maganga clinic in the town of Salima alongside specialist surgeon Gladys Ntwana.

The visit to the town focused on the practice of the eye clinic, and the Countess also met with healthcare workers who are helping people to regain their eyesight after illness.

She sat down on the floor with patients at the clinic, who have received trachomatous trichiasis eye surgery – a procedure the clinic specializes in.

Trachomatous trichiasis is a condition when repeated infections off the inner part of the upper eyelid cause the upper eyelid to turn inwards so that eyelashes scrape on the eyeball and can cause blindness.

Sophie has wowed with her thrifty fashion choices during her tour, opting for budget friendly outfits from Zara and recycling dresses she has been seen in before.

Today’s visit was a follow on from a hotel event that saw the Countess celebrate the success of surgeons eradicating the eye disease throughout Malawi.

Yesterday she attended the reception at the Sunbird Waterfront Hotel to celebrate the country’s success in reducing the infectious disease.

The mother then delivered a speech to mark the success of the Trachoma Elimination Programme.

Sophie is visiting Malawi in her role as a global ambassador for the IAPB, and as former vice patron of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.
