Ex-Vogue editor ALEXANDRA SHULMAN explains… how to wear the new mini skirt after 50

When the mini-skirt first bounced on to the scene in the 1960s, it was a central element of the youthquake shaking up the world — and nowhere more so than London.

Minis were synonymous with youth. Nobody even approaching middle age wore them, but the young of every shape and size did. There was no ‘are my legs good enough’ nonsense, the short skirts were a celebration of freedom.

But by the end of that decade the mini was disappearing, and when it re-emerged in the 1980s, something had changed. This time, in the Reagan and Thatcher era, it was all about showing off the shape of your legs, not your age.

And now, close on 60 years after those hemlines first rose, happily minis are for us all. But how? How do those of us who won’t see 49 again wear them without feeling a touch muttony? The ageless mini, 2022-style is chic.

A simple shaped skirt, with nothing frou frou, allows us to experiment with the silhouette on top. A balloon sleeved shirt tucked in and belted is a great option.

In the evening, just unbutton and add a necklace or statement earrings. Long blazer jackets (belted if you wish) are the modern pairing rather than anything with a whiff of the cropped boucle jackets of the late 1980s, while a roll, funnel or simple crew neck, is an easy option again kept long and crucially loose. This is not the time to embrace the embonpoint.

I would aim for neutrals — navy, white, black, and consider textures such as suede and leather which add a sophistication.

Bold prints can also be terrific but avoid anything too ditsy like a pastel floral.

The model is 51 and wearing dark, semi opaque tights (very dense black can look a touch frumpy), but for evening try a pair of patterned sheers — polka dot Saint Laurent style, or a fine fishnet — which add an elegant glamour teamed with a simple black top and skirt.

Teenagers pair theirs with Doc Martens boots, but rebel cool is a hard one to pull off past a certain age.

Low-heeled knee-length leather boots are better, and perfect for these cold days, or a block-heel square-toed mule. High spiky heels are best avoided.

As so often we can take our lead from Paris where the women have steered well clear of those flouncy midi dresses so popular here in recent years.

For this spring Dior gave us gorgeous neon satin minis and at Balmain, 54-year-old Carla Bruni (ok she’s Italian, but she’s an honorary Parisien) made the front pages looking sensational in a bodycon mini dress.

Away from the catwalk First Lady Brigitte Macron, 68, always wears her Louis Vuitton outfits well above the knee.

These women know the best accessory is a spritz of confidence — and a big smile.
