Brexit: Insider discusses UK state aid rules

Britain voted to leave the European Union in June 2016 by 52 percent of the vote to 48 percent. However the implementation of this result was repeatedly blocked, and only officially took place in January 2020.

Italian writer Fabio Dragoni on Twitter suggested European leaders are using the Delta coronavirus variant to “sabotage” Boris Johnson.

Marco Campomenosi, an MEP for the hard-right Italian Lega party, agreed.

He retweeted Mr Dragoni adding: “Only the latest childish attitude of the elites who LOST the referendum on Brexit and who – especially in the European Commission and in certain capitals – keep trying to obstruct the United Kingdom.

“Someone should remind them of the trade balance with the UK.”

German chancellor Angela Merkel had proposed a 14-day quarantine for all UK visitors arriving in the EU.

This is aimed at preventing the Delta variant, already dominant in Britain, from spreading across Europe.

Mr Johnson, who met Ms Merkel on Friday at Chequers, said the proposal “makes no sense”.

At a press conference after the meeting, the German chancellor admitted the Delta variant is spreading “very rapidly” in her country.

However, she expressed confidence Britons who have received two coronavirus jabs, will be able to visit Europe again in the near future.

Ms Merkel added: “But as you know we are reviewing continuously our travel restrictions and we think that in the foreseeable future those who have received double jabs will then, according to our classification – and now Britain obviously is a high incidence area – will be able to travel again without having to go into quarantine.

“At the beginning we didn’t have much experience with this variant but we’re dealing with it.

“And that is a continuous learning process… we have to adjust time and again to the most recent developments.”

Italian authorities have launched a major clampdown to prevent large numbers of England fans arriving in Rome, ahead of tonight’s Euro 2020 clash with Ukraine.

Extra police have been deployed to airports whilst checkpoints have been introduced on some of Italy’s borders.

Any fans who’ve been in the UK over the past two weeks will not be granted entry to the stadium.

Relations between Britain and the EU remain poor, with profound disagreements over the Northern Ireland protocol.

Under the terms of Boris Johnson’s Brexit, deal checks now take place on goods travelling between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

This has infuriated unionists, who argue it undermines their place in the UK.

Mr Johnson is urging the EU to show greater flexibility if it wants the protocol to survive.

Brussels has agreed to delay imposing some checks on chilled meats, but the dispute could re-erupt during the autumn.

Earlier this week Nissan announced a major new investment in its Sunderland plant in a big win for Brexit Britain.

Some 1,650 new jobs will be created to help produce electric vehicles.
