Spanish MEP Iratxe García Pérez has decried the actions of the Anglo-Swedish drug manufacturer over the failure to meets the EU’s vaccine demands. She hit out at the failure of the European Commission to take robust action to secure doses of AstraZeneca. The Leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats told the European Parliament’s plenary session on Wednesday that the pharmaceutical company was “laughing in the face” of Brussels and demanded a tougher response.
Ms García Pérez told the EU Plenary meeting: “Today we heard the news that 30 million doses have been found hidden in Italy.
“This is the last straw.
“They are laughing in our face. It is the moment to accuse a company that is destroying the prestige of other pharmaceutical companies.
“The commission must act quickly.”
She continued: “The export ban is not the solution.
“We could jeopardise the supply chain. But the prestige of the union is at risk.
“We all support the EU strategy, but we cannot resign ourselves to its failure.
“The next semester will be key.”
The MEP argued the bloc faces a difficult economic future and warned her fellow European politicians the odds of a quick bounce back were fading.
She said: “We have asked people for many sacrifices. The population is in anguish, panic and depression.
The return of free movement should only occur if we comply with the acceleration of vaccines.
“The dream of a rapid economic recovery is fading.”
